Common Jewelry Questions

When making a large purchase, we’ve found that many of our clients, and the community at large, like to do their research! We don’t blame you! To streamline the process and help you decide if Herbert’s is the choice for you, we put together the following list of Frequently Asked Questions. Don’t see your question on the list? Herbert’s is located at 7539 39th Ave. in Kenosha, WI (Next to Luigi’s Pizza). Our regular hours are Monday thru Friday from 10am-6pm, Saturday from 10am-4pm, and Closed on Sundays. Special extended holiday hours may apply. Follow the link here for map/directions.

We accept all major credit cards and cash. We also have a no-interest layaway plan which requires a monthly payment and is usually paid off in about 6 months. With this option, the merchandise stays in the store until it is paid in full.

Herbert’s will take in precious metals and some stones for store credit, used as a form of payment. We offer credit towards new merchandise, custom work, special orders and repairs. We do not pay out cash in order to protect you, a member of our community, and to maintain our integrity as a local business. We assess the value of your trade-in based on the current market for precious metals.

Herbert’s offers a unique diamond trade up program. We offer this on our center stone diamonds, diamond stud earrings and diamond solitaire pendants. If the diamond is purchased from Herbert’s, we give you what you paid for the stone towards an upgrade. This offer stands on stones purchased since our opening in 1938. If there are no records of purchase or the stone was purchased elsewhere, we will assess the value of the stone based on the current market using the GIA grading system. Herbert’s reserves the right to disqualify any stone that is damaged, treated, clarity enhanced or not of similar quality to the merchandise we carry.

Yes, we offer full service repair! We can repair gold, silver, platinum, watches and clocks. We repair jewelry that was not purchased at our store and give free estimates on all repairs. We also re-string pearls and beads and repair costume jewelry. In almost all cases, our repairs are done locally. We do not send them out.

Estimates can be completed while you wait in the store. More complex repair estimates can take 1-2 weeks.

This question can’t be answered without the ring. We measure the shank (band of the ring) to see how thick and wide it is, then determine how many sizes up or down it needs to go, if it has stones that will need to be tightened, and if the rhodium will need to be redone.

Some people are concerned about leaving their jewelry. Even though our repairs are done locally and not sent out, we still want you to feel comfortable when dropping off your most treasured possessions. After being in business for over 80 years, we have become one of the most trusted jewelers in Wisconsin! We believe in educating our customers so we always show you your stones under the microscope, and write down notations so you can identify your stones when you pick them up.

Herbert’s is happy to clean and check your jewelry while you wait, even if you purchased the item elsewhere. We offer this service at no charge.

Yes! We offer engraving on most items!

Yes, we change watch batteries and adjust bands! It usually takes just a few minutes while you are browsing throughout the store. Many local stores refer to Herbert’s to handle these repairs.

Rhodium is a member of the platinum family. It is used to plate white metals to make them whiter. White gold and silver are often plated with rhodium.
